Here, you'll find a list of Frequently Asked Questions.
Self-publishing is different from traditional publishing, in that the author is registered and identified as being the publisher of the work. This means the author is responsible for producing the book from start to finish and may seek help/services from professional companies to achieve this. As a self-published author, s/he will have more control over the manuscript, edits, illustrations, layout, etc. The author will also receive the highest royalties from book sales, and will keep their copyright and other rights to his/her work.
Yes. Yes. Yes. This is a very common question that We hear. Many authors feel that their manuscript is in perfect condition because their friends and family have read it and thought it was great. It's wonderful to have the support of your friends and family and positive reviews of the story; however, if they are not editors by trade, then you still need to have your manuscript critiqued by a professional. A professional editor will provide you with unbiased, constructive suggestions, edits, and critiques that will help polish your manuscript and prepare it for publishing standards.
Word is wonderful for typing your manuscript; however, it is not a sufficient graphic and layout design program to use to produce a book. If your goal is to create a professionally presented book, involving and incorporating content layout, illustrations/graphic designs, and file preparation for printing, then you should consider hiring a professional to do this for you, using high-quality design programs.
This is another commonly-asked question. Self-publishing is a very complex process. To create a high-quality product, it is necessary to hire professionals to help throughout the process. The overall cost often depends on the individual project itself. As a general rule of thumb, the cost can range anywhere from $2,000 - $6,000 or beyond - again, depending on the development of the project, services needed, professional service provider(s) hired by the author, and other detailed aspects of the project.
For some, deciding to become a self-published author can be a risk. We've established that there are costs involved, and rightfully so, but now you want to know how long it'll take for you to make a profit. Well, again, that depends on many factors. Once you have a high-quality product, one that consumers will find of value, now it's time to create a buzz for your work and get it in front of your audience. This is where outreach is important, regarding your audience, retailers, book signing events, etc. Distribution and publicity/marketing are a huge part of sales - and it all takes time and patience. Many authors, depending on how active they are, may sell hundreds of books throughout their first year, or maybe just a few. It all depends on how much effort is being made, the environment of the market, and strategy(ies) put into place.
Yes. Many publishing companies, both traditional and self, incorporate a contract or agreement prior to any services being performed. For the services We provide, We offer and enforce a Service(s) Agreement, which outlines Our services, procedures, prices, guidelines, etc. so everyone involved is clear of any/all expectations, and the author has an understanding of Our company policies.
